Melt value is the metal content at spot price, not a buy or sell price. Collectible coins can be worth much more. For reference only.
How to use it
- Find the stamp. Gold is usually marked in karats (10K, 14K, 18K) or parts per thousand (417, 585, 750). Sterling silver is marked 925 or “Sterling.” If the stamp isn’t listed, choose “other purity” and type the percentage.
- Weigh the item. A jeweler’s scale in grams or pennyweight (dwt) is best. A kitchen scale in ounces works for larger pieces, but those are ordinary ounces, not troy ounces; the calculator converts them for you.
- Add each item that has a different purity. Totals are shown for each metal and for everything together.
- To see part of the total, enter a percentage: 80 shows 80% of the melt value.
Things that change the answer
Stones, pearls, steel springs, solder and weighted handles add weight but no precious metal. Subtract them, or weigh only the metal. Gold-filled (GF), rolled gold plate (RGP), gold-plated (GP or HGE) and silver-plated (EPNS) items contain very little precious metal and are not priced here. A stamp is a claim, not a guarantee; a reputable buyer will test the metal before paying.
The math is simple: pure metal weight = weight × purity, and value = pure troy ounces × spot price. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams or 20 pennyweight.
