Is My Coin Silver?

Pick a coin and type the year on it. The mint mark helps for a few years, such as 1942 nickels and 1968 Canadian coins.

The quick rule for US coins

US dimes, quarters and half dollars dated 1964 or earlier are 90% silver. Kennedy half dollars dated 1965 to 1970 are 40% silver. Nickels with a large mint mark above Monticello are 35% silver: the 1942-P and 1942-S, and every nickel dated 1943 to 1945. Dollar coins struck for circulation after 1935 are not silver, but some Eisenhower dollars sold to collectors are 40% silver.

The quick rule for Canadian coins

Canadian dimes, quarters, half dollars and dollars are silver through 1966: 92.5% until 1919 and 80% from 1920. Coins dated 1967 are silver too, and so are some 1968 dimes and quarters. A magnet tells them apart: the nickel coins that replaced them in 1968 are attracted to a magnet, and the silver coins are not.

US silver content and weights come from the US Mint; Canadian figures are checked against published coin specifications, listed on each coin page. The checker answers for standard coins; errors, proof sets and counterfeits can differ, so weigh a coin if the answer says “it depends.”
