How the melt value is worked out
Melt value is the pure silver in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.
-
31.103 g × .999 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 0.9990 troy oz
0.9990 troy oz × $54.05 spot = $53.99
How to identify it
- The obverse shows Walking Liberty. The reverse showed a heraldic eagle until mid-2021, when a new design of an eagle landing with an oak branch replaced it.
- Proof and burnished versions carry a W (West Point) or other mint mark; bullion coins usually have none.
- The US Mint gives the coin's weight as one troy ounce (31.103 g) of 99.9% silver, so it holds 0.999 troy oz of pure silver.
Melt value vs. collector value
Bullion coins usually sell for a premium over melt value. Proof, low-mintage and graded coins can be worth considerably more than their metal.
