How the melt value is worked out

Melt value is the pure silver in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.

  • 11.31 g × .925 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 0.3364 troy oz
    0.3364 troy oz × $54.05 spot = $18.18

How to identify it

  • The 1849 florin leaves D G (Dei Gratia) out of Victoria's title, which earned it the name Godless florin.
  • Gothic florins (1851–1887) are larger, with Gothic lettering and the date in Roman numerals, such as mdccclxxiv for 1874.
  • Later Victorian florins show the Jubilee head (1887–1892) or the veiled old head (1893–1901). Edward VII florins (1902–1910) show Britannia standing on the bow of a ship.
  • George V florins dated 1911–1919 are sterling; coins dated 1920 or later look similar but hold less silver or none.

Melt value vs. collector value

Worn George V florins usually trade close to melt. The Godless florin, Gothic florins in good condition and Edward VII florins with clear detail often sell for more; Edward VII florins wore quickly, and many have faint dates.
