How the melt value is worked out

Melt value is the pure gold in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.

  • 7.216 g × .9166 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 0.2127 troy oz
    0.2127 troy oz × $3,996.90 spot = $849.94

How to identify it

  • Ottoman coins have no portrait. One side shows the sultan's tughra (calligraphic signature); the other names the Constantinople mint in Arabic script with the sultan's accession year. A small number on the tughra side is the regnal year.
  • Ornamental 'de luxe' (ziynet) pieces have a wider, thinner flan with decorated borders. They are a lighter standard and are not the regular coin.
  • Republic coins show Ataturk with TURKIYE CUMHURIYETI and 1923, plus a number for the year of the Republic. They are still struck at the regular 22-karat weight.
  • The Turkish State Mint has struck Resat coins again since 2022. They carry Mehmed V's tughra and the accession year 1327 with no minting date, so they look like originals.

Melt value vs. collector value

Modern Ataturk and Resat strikes trade on their gold value. Genuine Ottoman coins of scarcer sultans, rare regnal years or high grade can be worth more, but a modern Resat can't be told from an original by its date.
