How the melt value is worked out
Melt value is the pure gold in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.
-
1.667 g × .900 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 0.0482 troy oz
0.0482 troy oz × $3,996.90 spot = $192.76
How to identify it
- One side shows the Mexican eagle on a cactus eating a snake, with ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS above.
- The other side has DOS PESOS and the date inside a wreath, with the Mo mint mark of Mexico City.
- There is no portrait, which sets it apart from the 2½ pesos and larger Hidalgo coins.
- Most coins dated 1945 are restrikes: Mexico kept striking that date for decades afterward.
Melt value vs. collector value
Coins dated 1945 are by far the most common and trade close to melt. The 1919 and 1920 circulation coins in high grades, and the low-mintage 1944, 1946 and 1947 dates, can be worth more.
