How the melt value is worked out
Melt value is the pure silver in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.
-
31.107 g × .9999 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 1.0000 troy oz
1.0000 troy oz × $54.05 spot = $54.05
How to identify it
- A kookaburra on the reverse, with a new design each year.
- Coins dated before 2018 are .999 fine; every 1 oz Kookaburra contains one troy ounce of silver. The Perth Mint states a minimum weight of 31.107 g for current coins.
Melt value vs. collector value
Bullion coins usually sell for a premium over melt value. Proof, low-mintage and graded coins can be worth considerably more than their metal.
