How the melt value is worked out
Melt value is the pure silver in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.
-
2013–present (.999): 31.21 g × .999 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 1.0024 troy oz (the issuer states 1.0000 troy oz, which we use)
1.0000 troy oz × $54.05 spot = $54.05 -
1997–2012 (.958): 32.45 g × .958 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 0.9995 troy oz
0.9995 troy oz × $54.05 spot = $54.02
How to identify it
- Britannia stands with a trident and shield on the reverse.
- Recent coins include security features such as a latent image that changes when tilted.
Melt value vs. collector value
Bullion coins usually sell for a premium over melt value. Proof, low-mintage and graded coins can be worth considerably more than their metal.
