How the melt value is worked out
Melt value is the pure gold in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.
-
41.667 g × .900 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 1.2057 troy oz
1.2057 troy oz × $3,996.90 spot = $4,818.87
How to identify it
- Winged Victory on the reverse with the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl behind.
- Restrikes are dated 1947 and contain the same gold as originals.
- The reverse is marked 37.5 Gr. ORO PURO (37.5 g of pure gold).
Melt value vs. collector value
Restrikes trade close to melt; original dates other than 1947 can carry collector premiums.
