How the melt value is worked out

Melt value is the pure gold in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.

  • 31.11 g × .9999 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 1.0001 troy oz (the issuer states 1.0000 troy oz, which we use)
    1.0000 troy oz × $3,996.90 spot = $3,996.90

How to identify it

  • A sugar maple leaf on the reverse; the monarch's effigy on the obverse.
  • Coins from 1979 to 1982 are .999 fine; later coins are .9999.
  • Coins from 1979 to about 1982 are .999 fine and also contain one troy ounce of gold.

Melt value vs. collector value

Bullion coins usually sell for a premium over melt value. Proof, low-mintage and graded coins can be worth considerably more than their metal.
