How the melt value is worked out

Melt value is the pure gold in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.

  • 13.96 g × .986 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 0.4425 troy oz
    0.4425 troy oz × $3,996.90 spot = $1,768.79

How to identify it

  • One side shows Franz Joseph I facing right with FRANC IOS I D G AVSTRIAE IMPERATOR.
  • The other side shows the crowned double-headed eagle holding a sword, scepter and orb, with the Latin titles and the date.
  • At about 40 mm across it is much wider but thinner than most gold coins of its weight.
  • Coins dated 1915 are official restrikes; the Austrian Mint still makes them.

Melt value vs. collector value

Coins dated 1915 are common restrikes and trade close to melt. Original coins with earlier dates are scarcer and can sell for more, especially in good condition.
