How the melt value is worked out
Melt value is the pure gold in the coin multiplied by the spot price. We use the coin's standard minted weight; worn coins weigh slightly less.
-
2.083 g × .900 fine ÷ 31.1035 g per troy oz = 0.0603 troy oz
0.0603 troy oz × $3,996.90 spot = $240.94
How to identify it
- One side shows a bust of Miguel Hidalgo facing left, with DOS Y MEDIO PESOS and the date beside it.
- The other side shows the Mexican eagle with ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.
- It looks like the 5 and 10 pesos but is much smaller; the 2 pesos has no portrait.
- Most coins dated 1945 are restrikes, made in large numbers long after that year.
Melt value vs. collector value
Common 1945-dated coins trade close to melt. The low-mintage 1944 and 1947 dates, and 1918–1920 coins in uncirculated condition, can carry a collector premium.
